What is a midwife?

A midwife is recognized throughout the world as the most appropriate maternity care provider for most women. The international definition of the midwife as recognized by the International Confederation of Midwives World Health Organization, International Federation of Obstetrician and Gynecologist and the local Licensing Body and the Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago is as follows 'A midwife is a person who has successfully completed the prescribed courses of studies in midwifery and has acquired the requisite qualifications to be registered certified and licensed to practice midwifery'.
